What is the Best Kindle Cover?
This is a really common question nowadays. After all many of us have received Kindles as gifts over the last year, and we all want to keep it in pristine condition... don't we?
The problem is there is no one Kindle cover that is the best for everyone. It depends on how you use your reader, and how you want it to feel when actually reading.
For one person a formal lighted leather cover is perfect, but for another nothing could get in the way more! So you see  I cannot say which is the best case for your ebook reader. But I can help you choose the best one by explaining the different types available, and their particular advantages and disadvantages.

Kindle Sleeves
These are fast becoming the favorite style of cover for ebook readers. From simple knitted socks to quilted envelope style covers they all have one thing in common; they slip off easily for when you want to actually use your Kindle.

This is perhaps why they are so popular today. As the Kindles themselves get lighter and more comfortable to handle many people do not wish to spoil the effect by attaching a permanent cover to them.

The benefits of sleeve style covers are obvious:
  • Lightweight
  • Offer good protection - often partially waterproof and well padded
  • Slip off so you can use your Reader as intended with nothing getting in the way.
  • Low priced
  • Come in many styles so you can really personalise your ebook reader.
The potential disadvantages are:
  • Offer no protection when you are using the device.
  • Some can be a little cheap as far as construction is concerned.
  • Many do not close securely.
If you love the way the Kindle feels in your hand just as it is, and do not want a cover to get in the way of your reading experience choose one of the sleeves on offer. Since the 4th generation Kindles arrived there are more great sleeves for the Kindle than ever.

Kindle Jackets
Jacket style covers were previously perhaps the most popular way to protect ebook readers. This is not very surprising since the jacket makes an unfamiliar electronic gadget "feel" more like and ordinary book.

But, as the readers themselves have become lighter, easier to use and cheaper, these jackets are slowly becoming less popular. But for many they are still the best form of protection to use, because:
  • jacket style covers offer protection all the time, even when you are reading.
  • they are often far easier to use with lights, since the lights can fit in a pocket in the jacket, rather than having to be stored in a bag or purse.
  • these do give the modern electronic reader a traditional feel.
  • many jacket style covers can double as flip stands to prop your Kindle up to read at a tablet "hands-free".
  • with several luxury brands on offer you can spoil yourself with a really fabulous (and expensive) leather cover to make your ebook reader really special.
If you want you Kindle to feel more like a traditional book, or you like the idea of reading hands-free a book style jacket is the ideal choice.

There are a few potential drawbacks though:
  • Often more expensive. If you find a cheap leather version the chances are it will be really cheaply made too. If choosing budget models it is better to ignore the leather products on offer.
  • They will add a little weight to the device.
  • Check for how the device fits. Some will have straps that cut across the corners of the device. You might not find these a problem, I found them to really get in the way.
There were previously issues with hinges holding Kindles into the Amazon own brand covers. Those designed for the 4th generation kindle and Kindle Touch no longer use this system, so have not caused any locking of readers at all.
